SNEKERHEADZ directed by David T. Friendly & Mick Partridge

2015-VIII-7 | Color | 73 min| Directed by David T. Friendly & Mick Partridge

To Rock or Stock? Sneakerheads will do almost anything to get their hands on a unique pair of kicks, going to such extreme lengths as hiding in trash cans to score a pair of Retro Jordan 11s to camping for days in sub zero temperatures for the latest Nike Foamposites. How did sneakers become as prized as collectable art? From the shores of Cali to the congested streets of Tokyo, Sneakerheadz examines the cultural influence of sneaker collecting around the world and delves into a subculture whose proud members don’t just want to admire art, they want to wear it.

CARTEL LAND directed by Matthew Heineman

2015-VII-3 | Color | English | 100 min | Directed by Matthew Heineman

Summary:
With unprecedented access, CARTEL LAND is a riveting, on-the-ground look at the journeys of two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy - the murderous Mexican drug cartels. In the Mexican state of Michoacán, Dr. Jose Mireles, a small-town physician known as "El Doctor," leads the Autodefensas, a citizen uprising against the violent Knights Templar drug cartel that has wreaked havoc on the region for years. Meanwhile, in Arizona's Altar Valley - a narrow, 52-mile-long desert corridor known as Cocaine Alley - Tim "Nailer" Foley, an American veteran, heads a small paramilitary group called Arizona Border Recon, whose goal is to stop Mexico's drug wars from seeping across our border. Filmmaker Matthew Heineman embeds himself in the heart of darkness as Nailer, El Doctor, and the cartel each vie to bring their own brand of justice to a society where institutions have failed. CARTEL LAND is a chilling, visceral meditation on the breakdown of order and the blurry line between good and evil.

A piece of paper can be transformed into a beautiful rose or into a ball of crumpled paper, the same way dreams can come true or become terrible nightmares.

Shot in Super 16mm, the original version of this short film was created for a cinema class in the University of Puerto Rico. While the original version was edited digitally from a standard resolution transfer of the film, this revisited edition offers a reinterpretation of the original story, re-edited from scratch using nothing but the 16mm silent footage accompanied by The Swan Lake Suit No 1 composed by Tchaikovsky.

In the streets of San Juan, where inequality is the bread and butter of everyday life; one thing is to be solidary, and another thing is to be solidary in exchange for nothing.

Written and directed by Paola Perea in 2012 the original short film was presented in Bizarro Horror and Fantasy Short Film Festival that took place that same year in the University of Puerto Rico. After being in oblivion for almost half a decade, this revisited edition captures the essence of the original film; with a completely new editing of the raw footage that was fitted to the rhythm of Brahms Hungarian Dance No 1.
