Students were out for over a month and it was the first day of DAI 2 in Architecture School, so… What better way than a little bit of workout to warm up and get in the mood for creating? Atxu Amann sets the tone, the music does the rest.

DAI 2 is a continuation in time of DAI 1, Drawing, Analysis and Ideation class for first year students in Madrid Architecture School.

After six months outside the architecture school I came back for the first days of classes of the second semester and my friends and professors Atxu Amann and Marta Maiz were there organizing a crazier than ever commencement class for DAI2 (Drawing Analysis and Ideation 2). I was luckily there to shoot it and I end up editing this video featuring the awesome soundtrack from David Fincher's last movie The Social Network composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. English and spanish subtitles are available. - I.B.

This is probably my last project in school. It has been a good time all this years. It's time to move on.

Fix your Windows

We have been discussing about Cuba this days in architecture school. Architectural Association School students from London went there last month and have now come to Madrid Architecture School. We worked together here for one week with the data they brought from their travel to La Habana. Our team has concluded that what Cubans really need is to create a new operating system for themselves.

We have call the solution: "Fix your Windows" and we have created a book called 'El precioso libro no preciso' 'The Precious Imprecise Book'. It's a collection of tips and tools that all together and by upcoming updates created by the users themselves, should become a tool that shows how to fix real windows of an actual house.

The project itself is a metaphor of how by knowledge and communication things can start to get fixed. We choose windows because of their architectonic condition as an element that communicates the inside with the outside and also because we realize many windows in La Habana were old and damaged. We believe that the only way to fix problems, is to help people create their own systems, so they can not only solve their actual problems but they can continue finding solutions for future problems and the get more independent every day.

Our team was formed by Stavros Papavassiliou (AA), Ioannes Busca (ETSAM), Sofia Sclopis (ETSAM/Milan) and Agnete Plauborg Lorentzen (ETSAM/Copenhagen). Agnete did a great video that showcases our book project:

TRIBUTE VIDEO | Tribute to Andres Peréa

Madrid Architecture School professor Andres Peréa is retiring and Miguel Beloqui has been in charge of doing a tribute video featuring comments and interviews of his comrades, friends and ex-alumni. Iñigo Cornago and Guillermo Fernandez were also involved and we have been editing the final video in my house. I still have the Apple G3 PowerBook laptop that appears in the video, it was a gift from Alfonso Ortega.

CONCEPT DESIGN | SIKA 2009

I have teamed up with Laura Currais, and Pablo Muñoz for this years SIKA contest. After an intense brainstorming we decided that building a transatlantic was the most realistic but also satiric way to answer to the brief about building a complex in Caiman island so that politicians all over the world can meet and solve the world economic crisis that is hitting all of us so hard these days.

We didn't have much time so we just took this amazing drawing by Stephen Biesty from the book Incredible Cross-Sections just as found,  and we added some details here and there. If we had won we would have sent a check to Mr. Biesty.

TRIBUTE VIDEO | Javier Seguí Super Size

This video recorded for AAGRAFA, is a performance that Atxu Amann has been preparing with her  first year Madrid Architecture School students for a couple of months. Professor Javier Seguí from the Ideation Department will retire soon, and they have decided to pay him a tribute by taking one of the small drawings he usually does in his notebooks and translate it in to a huge matrix of 8 by 8 Din-A0 size drawings. This is the resulting video.

CONCEPT VIDEO | Mrs. Google

Yesterday, I went to Matadero in Madrid where a friend of  mine, Pablo Muñoz, was participating in a workshop with Jose Luis Vallejo and Ecosistema Urbano. They were recording people on the streets and making videos and I had the chance to collaborate in one of them. The pictures that appear overlapped are the first result shown in Google when introducing the words that the woman says. It's funny to think that the video would be different if it was done in another country, or in someone else computer, or just in another date... Who knows how Google algorithms work. Anyway, The music is a 'Ilde Classic' courtesy of  Ildefonso Fernández, the master and commander behind AAGRAFA

DESIGN | Sika award 2008

We have teamed up with Beatriz del Castillo and her friends for the 2008 Sika Architectural Competition. This year's theme was "Profitable City". The proposed idea was to merge the colors of the city with the colors of brands. Coke is red, Orange, the telephone brand is orange and Caja Madrid has a green bear as a logo. So this is it. Simple idea and fast execution. We were awarded with a mention.

LAB | DUSTLIC™ by GROD!

Now you won’t have to worry about how you place your LERSTA IKEA lamp. With the DUSTLIC™ filter the dust will not penetrate keeping the light bulb clean thus enhancing it’s lighting performance. DUSTLIC™ is easy to install and remove.

International and Japanese printed advertising campaigns for DUSTLIC™, a prototype created for a design class in Architecture School of Madrid in 2008 with professors of GEP: Grupo de Experimentación Proyectual.

Boards read like this

In this year projects class we were supposed to start with two ideas and transform them making prototypes in the process. I have been working on DUSTLIC and the DBBP projects together and presented both in the simplest possible way. I believe that a project is a problem and what the designer is supposed to do as architect is to solve it in the most efficient way. In this case I solved the problem of the dust in my lamp with a simple easy to produce piece of plastic. I designed a plastic cover for my Ikea Lersta lamp called DUSTLIC to prevent dust from getting in when I put it looking upwards so that the light is not direct. This is a problem that potentially millions of owners of this lamp might have, being a cheap lamp sold all over the world. But suddenly the question transformed...
Do all these users know they have this problem? And if so, do these users know that this problem they have, now can be solved with DUSTLIC? The product is designed having that in mind from the very first moment and the final boards summarize the process. The only way of reaching the attention of consumers is by commercial campaigns that explain the product in an easy way so that everyone can understand it. Everyone but teachers, I guess. I decided that the best way of explaining the project is with printed ad campaigns as the ones shown in everyday magazines (left: international campaign / right: Japanese campaign). Those campaigns would communicate the idea to potential consumers.  -Ioannes

CONCEPT VIDEO | Expertizacion - Taller Murcia

The students of this years GEP class, we spent four days from April 9 to 12, in a workshop in Centro Parraga, Murcia with Moritz Waldemeyer and Yvonne Laurisen as guest stars, and teachers from Madrid Architecture School Paula Montoya, Izaskun Chinchilla, Jose Luis Vallejo and Andrés Perea.

The point was to get there with some stuff we were already working on in class, and Moritz and Yvonne would help us to become experts in whatever we wanted, in a couple of days. At least, that was the initial plan, they called it: "Expertization".

Our team named Noise Reduction was formed by: Elena Alvarez, Enrique Bayarri, Miguel Beloqui, Ioannes Busca, Silvia Echeverria, Guillermo Fernandez & Raul Nieves. After having a lot of fun playing with everything that everyone had in mind, buying weird stuff and mixing it all together, we finally end up creating a project where a building facade was supposed to respond to the noise produced in the streets.

The process, where so many new ideas emerged, has been the most rewarding part of the workshop. It's  hard to explain the experience. I think we all had a great time. It's difficult to imagine a better environment to create crazy weird stuff.

LAB | West of the Moon, East of the Sun

Another crazy semester in ETSAM comes to its end. This year my friend Miguel Beloqui recommended me to meet him in the GEP: 'Grupo de Exploración Proyectual' led by Andrés Perea together with professors Paula Montoya, Izaskun Chinchilla and Jose Luis Vallejo. They were known to be a special group, making things no-one else does and stuff like that. So I thought It would be nice to give it a try.

This year's topic was the Performative Architect vs Representative Architect and this was the schedule of the classes:

Week 1: Four proposals
Weeks 2-4:Three designs
Weeks 5-10: Two prototypes
Weeks 11-14: One final project

FIRST INSTALLMENT

From the Utopic Archigram projects to the build reality in Beaubourg.
There are realized projects, realizable projects and unrealizable projects. To what extent influence unfeasible projects in the creation of feasible ones? The experimental work is based on creating utopic elements in a primarily visual way. Letting the imagination run. Proposing problems that then will be resolved and finding more problems in the road.
Piano+Rogers center Pompidou as a built work, Archigrams walking city as unbuild work, my own Antiumbrela project in India and the moon as a place o explore.
The Pompidou emerges and leaves Paris. Culture is on the move. The Pompidou comes to your town. People can not believe what they see. When it leaves nothing is what it was.

Behind the board, we had to write a self critic of our own work, mine read like this:

You belive you are smartass and you don't seem to work hard, isn't it? We'll see.

SECOND INSTALLMENT:
THIRD INSTALLMENT:

From this point forward, classes were interesting but for some reason I started to feel I was loosing my time. It was my fifth year in school and I already got bored of making things just for the sake of meeting the dead lines, without thinking beyond. So, I decided that every time they ask me to do something, I would use something I did before. I didn't make the second delivery, I dust off my two favorite prototypes from the past and got them ready for the 3rd installment.

Morgan & Nobjects

I did Morgan a couple of years ago and it had some structural problems so I decided to reinforce it with fiberglass rods acquired on a kite shop. I also made a beautiful diagram to analyze  its skin.

On the other hand, continue working with Nobjects. Thinking on everything that could be generated with them. It was great having time to do that. I got so excited about future possibilities that I decided to keep on developing them to the next final phase. Jose Luis was my tutor and I was supposed to convince him so that my final project of the semester was to develop further my Nobjects proyect. He was a little sceptical at the beginning, he told me to try something 'more serious'. I told him if selling 2 million of them would start to make it a serious project. He understood, and let me go on. Jose Luis is a wise visionary, after all.

FOURTH INSTALLMENT

The final delivery day was upon us. GEP students are know for the amount of work they do. We were encouraged to work more everyday, everything was about producing more, first was producing and then was thinking. Everyday started to be repetitive. I got fed up. And as I like to do just the contrary of what people does, I put emphasis even more on not to produce new things, but to organize my past stuff. I realized that my last years production volume was enough for this class, so I decided to organize all my works and make Din A5 files as reference files of all my projects and ideas. I bought an file archival box and started creating the files. In the process of re-making Morgan and re-thinking Nobjects eve more  ideas grew and more files were generated. FInding a way to organizing them was the priority number one. Once organized many ideas could re-emerged any time. I ended up making a poster with some of the best files for the final delivery.

I also created a thick folder that contained a box replicating the classic Leavening red box sold by Royal brand in Spain at a bigger scale. It  contained all the Din A5 files I did. This is the time when I came up with the name: AA&NN. I was bored of making  stuff  just for class and I started thinking on making a company. A leavening company. A company that makes you grow. Sounded cool. After that I created the three books that were supposed to be in the second phase and I haven't done yet. They were ideas taken from the files printed in Din A3 size and bind together.

After all the semester turn out to be incredible. I even had a grade of 9 over 10 and as I didn't have to work so much, I had time to think a lot.  I learned many things that I tried to summarize in the last memory of the final installment. Durin this time a name-less comic superstar that I would later name EdFramed was born. He is hidden in the board above.

FINAL INSTALLMENT

Memory
I have planned the 2007-2008 GEP course from the very begining as an overlap of stuff. This overlap starts taking as starting elements things I have done in the past.
It is not about simulating a situation in which I have been before but re-utilizing useful elements in actual situations and projects. As the brief is not specific, and we are just encouraged to produce, and from my point of view, if there is no a problem to solve, there is no a project that has to be made, I generate both the project and the problem. I'm lucky to have many problems, here a list some:
-Finding a comfortable enough working method in witch I can produce things.
-Finding a way in witch I can obtain money not in the far future and without having to die in the trying
-Finding a way to just pass this class
-Finding a better way to organize myself and my parents house that are moving next year.
-Finding the way of beeing free enough to pass some classes of the past
-etc.
On the other hand, there are other things apart from finding problems, like the things I would like to do to be happy. So I have choose to start with an storyboard project of a story about the Pompidu that leaves Paris. In an utopian way, I started drawing unprejudiced ideas and drawings. Just having fun. While doing this...I thought in this:
One day you wake up, swich on the computer and you see a sunglasses design  competition in internet. You feel you want to do it, you want to work on it. You are so excited. And you have many ideas. But you can't. Because you have to produce a dossier for your boss. It is your priority. Period. It would be so great if you were able to produce every-time, anytime, whatever you want. If you feel you want to design a door knob, you design a door knob. The energy you put on making anything is bigger and the result are much better when you do what you like in the moment you want. Changeover, reboot.

MEMORY (reboot)
I have planned the 2007-2008 GEP course this way. I am going to produce whatever I want and organize it in Din A5 files. I'm not going to make bread but leavening. All kind of formal deliveries in witch bureaucratic dossiers must be done are avoided. Having in mind that those could be produced in the last weeks with the leavening produced in the months before. The aim of this is to explore this model and it's consecuences. Flux of elements are created that are organized and what's most important, stuff is not produced just to produce, it's done when I feel like doing it.
I realized that things are not done for a purpose, things are done and then used for a certain purpose. I don't feel nothing must be hidden. The works and prototypes are presented as works done in previous years, that are rescued and rethought. I'm aware, that it would probably be better for me, instead of showing them almost completed to show them as a process. I was able to fake the reality and lie, saying that those were projects I was actually working on. Morgan for example. One day I could speak about the PVC, another day I could talk as I was folding it and playing with it. Next week one step more...and continue like this until the final presentation. Fake trials and errors. Fake investigation and analysis that seem coherent but with the end result present from the very beginning. Methods we are so used to see in Architecture School.
I'm sure if I would follow the common way, I would be much better considered. Not just as if I took a thing from the past and reuse it. The academic results would be even better. However that would be a huge lie.  The system works in a way so that only result matter. You can steal and lie if that is for better grades and people that follow this path are more likely to triumph. Then why I haven't do that? well... I've been reading Fight Club and I agree with the fact that self-improvement is masturbation and self-destruction may be the answer... this and also just to find a different working path.
The making of Morgan is as simple as having and idea and trying to develop it. Go find some PVC canvas and start working with it, using diferent folding methods. In one of the briefs, we were encouraged to start working with whatever we had on hand, emphasizing on the physical and real character of the proposal. But then three designs are supposed to be delivered. I don't get it. I think the course has been planned in a wrong way, the pyramidal scheme of 4-3-2-1 doesn't work. I belive this would be a much better way of working:

Prototypes (wathever, real fisical elements) that led to more refined designs and new ideas that lead to more designs and organization of proposals that led to choose a final project to develop it further.

This is a more natural and fun way. If you are working in a design that comes from an idea, and then this design must become a prototype, good results are not guaranteed. But creating real prototypes from scratch results on a bunch of great material to work with and from witch many new ideas, designs and proposals grow.
In the old days, buildings were not drawn before they were made. That was the begining. Making tangible things. We started with sculpture or making objects and tools, then we continued drawing, then comes music, photography and cinema, among others. Prefabricated tools to communicate and work, that conclude with writing, the most abstract language and the most economic one. This is the end, writing some words and leaving.

CONTENT OF THE FINAL INSTALLMENT

We were supposed to produce: 4 proposals, 3 designs, 2 prototypes and 1 project, so I did that but transforming the order:
Two prototypes:

Morgan and Nobjects.
Three Five designs:
Walking Pompidou: an animation Project
Rolling House
Antiumbrela
Morgan & Nobjects
One Project
A business plan based on Nobjects as a toy. A playing system that open children's mind and would lead to a new man that starts with a new children. What the 'Walking Pompidou Aanimation' project transmited in a utopian way here is presented in a real way.
Tens of proposals
Every file archived in the box is potentially a proposal. some more developed that others.

AA&NN Leavening Company is created.

DESIGN | Sáenz de Oiza

We have been digitalizing old tapes featuring Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza this days in AAGRAFA. Oiza was an Architect and Professor in Architecture School in Madrid. And one of his first buildings is the  Arantzazu Sanctuary in Oñati, my hometown in which he collaborated with artist such as Jorge Oteiza, nestor Basterretxea and Eduardo Chillida back in the fifties. We present here four discs collecting many lectures, classes and some tributes to his work. This is the list of the releases on DVD available now on ETSAM library. A good dose of nostalgia.

DESIGN | Le Centre Georges Pompidou

Today we have been digitalizing an old VHS to DVD in AAGRAFA. A documentary realized by Richard Copans about the Centre Georges Pompidou, an awesome building located in the heart of Paris designed more that 30 years ago by architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. I Hope many people can enjoy it now in it's new format. The VHS tape had only one audio track but I found out two more audio tracks on the net so I've been able to author them in a single disc and make a menu using a children's drawing of the building  founded online. I/m preety happy with the final product. Available in ETSAM library with the Deposit Number [V-687]

DESIGN | Architecture Week 2006

The Architecture Week is back once again, and there are events focusing on architecture all over the city as well as long hour lines to visit the most symbolic buildings in Madrid. The Architecture School has been organizing lectures from the beginning of October and the AAGRAFA team was there to record them all and make them available in DVD. Now you have the chance to revive them all from the comfort of your couch. Available in ETSAM library.

LAB | Antiumbrela

Intervention in a stepwell in India. Developed in a design class in Madrid Architecture School in 2005 with professors Aranguren + Gallegos.
This is a project I can not talk about. It's a secret project under development. Just take a look to this image.  I hope to be able to write about it in the near future. I can only say that I obtained a good grade with just this A4 drawing in an Architecture School class. Well, I can also say, I guess, that: "Efficiency is priority number one people, because waste is a thief".  -Ioannes

LAB | Morgan I & II prototypes

Mor Gan I & II prototypes
These prototypes were designed for a design class in the Architecture school of Madrid during the year 2005 with professors Aranguren + Gallegos. The main idea was to create a membrane that would cover the user, that was foldable and transportable and that could be built using simple materials and folding operations. We wanted to avoid utopic ideas, so we worked on the real-scale model from the very beginning.

Material
We were looking for a large-scale recyclable material and we realized that any industry generates waste at a much higher speed than any domestic environment. We chose the PVC canvas used in advertisement banners, discarded in the printing process or reused once it has fulfilled its purpose. PVC is ductile and tenacious; it presents dimensional stability and has very good resistance to environment and flames.

Building process
We proceeded with an old origami technique. The folds were reinforced with staples and we tried to use scissors as little as possible.

Mor Gan I
Starting with a 2.7×2.7 meters rectangular canvas and based on a series of origami folds, a semicubic element of 0.6×0.6×0.6 m was generated. Once folded it fitted into a regular Ikea plastic bag.

Mor Gan II
From a square canvas of 3.7×3.7 meters a semicubic space of 0.9x 0.9×0.9 m was generated. The structure was reinforced with two fiberglass rods, 3 mm in diameter and 185 cm long used in the construction of kites. Once folded it could be carried in a classic blue Ikea bag.

Visit the website: https://aaandnn.com/lab/less-is-mor-gan/
The theme of this years projects class was "Less is More". Each student had choose a previously used material and give it a second use. The results were awesome, everyone created great things.  I will post some photos of the presentation one of this days. My idea was to reuse  those big commercials canvases that hang on the buildings fold it as a cube so that children could use it as a tent.
This following video is the making of the second Morgan. The canvas was bigger that the room so I had some complications. This is a time lapse resume of  one hour fighting with the PVC. I used a traditional stapler commonly used to staple paper and an classic origami folding system so that I didn't have to cut material. From a 2 dimnsional square to a habitable 3 dimensional cube. Voila! -Ioannes

LAB | You and Both - Intervention in Upper Lawn Pavilion

In this year's Projects class in Architecture School, each student had to choose from a list of existing houses, draw and analyze them first, and then, made a proposal for an expansion. I chose architects Alison and Peter Smithson's Upper Lawn Pavilion. I discovered this couple's work in the travel we did to the UK last year. It was such a great experience, we visited many of their buildings.

However, while researching to find information to draw the house properly I come up with their books and writings and this is when I really started to understand their approach towards the architecture. Just a magnificent, clear minded, honest, human scale architects. Nothing to do with what we are used to see now a days in magazines.

By the way, I started working with autoCAD in this my third year in school. It has been a headache at first but, everything seems to go smooth now. I trace the drawings of the house based on the ones found in an old Italian magazines from the school library.

LAB | Pavilion for Adolf Loos's Möller House

The second semester comes to its end and so does the second year in the Architecture School. In this year's Projects class I did a proposal for a Pavilion for visitors in architects Adolf Loos's Möller House.

Memory
From the start the pavilion is thought not only as an extension to the house for the people who visit the it, but a versatile meeting point for anyone, to organize exhibitions, meet ing up with people and much more. The backyard of the house is a nice space for that.
The proposed pavilion is basically a prefabricated metallic arch that is seven meters high in its upper part and crosses the garden behind the house from one side to the other, covering the 98 square meters of it and transforming the green space in a polyvalent space. The textile roof that covers the structure can be folded, opening the space to the rest of the garden. On sunny days everything is opened and textile walls are used as projection screens.
All the furniture and systems needed are provided by four blocks that keep everything inside them. Their interiors expands throughout the pavilion when needed. Chairs for example are kept in these blocks and visitors can take them and put them back when they don't need them anymore.

LAB | Arana House Expansion

This second year in ETSAM Projects 2 class we had to made an expansion proposal for Arana House in Madrid.

Memory:
The expansion of Arana house in the Ribera of Manzanares is a complex project due to a law of conservation of buildings with a certain typology established years after the completion of the building. That means that any alteration in the house has to be done now with the actual normative, and basically, the full house would have to be be modified in the case of any intervention on it. That's why the house has not suffered any renewal work from the outside for a long time. However, the needs of the inhabitants in the house have change through the years, what makes an expansion inevitable.
One of the inhabitants, who is a huge Star Wars fan is looking for a bigger room to keep collecting stuff. From the start, the decision of putting a prefabricated container in the flat roof of the house was an idea that seemed to work. This kind of industrial element doesn't try to mimic with the house but with the cinematic imaginary infused by the filmmaker George Lucas through his movies. The contrast with the house also helps to emphasize the idea of an alien ship that rest in the roof. As the extension is just a prefabricated element installed in the roof without the need of mayor work, the need of a license to build is not necessary. The façade of the house itself is not modified and in the worst case scenario, if the element has to be removed, this is a task hat could be easily done.
The user can access to this container from the terrace and from his room through a spiral stairs that connect both spaces. The interior is completely diaphanous so the user can organize the inside of the room depending on his needs thanks to articulated screens. The floor works also as a container so that there is no need of extra furniture to keep things, and space is liberated for other purposes. The fact that the container is elevated makes it possible to continue using the roof of the terrace adding a shade for the rain and the sun.
