Weekly Shonen Jump 50th Anniversary

Today we have received in the mail this Weekly Shonen Jump issue dated January 29, 1986 in which Goku was about to enter Red Ribbon's Muscle Tower. What makes us remember that the first issue of WSJ was published on August 1, 1968 and the magazine is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month. To celebrate the anniversary, this week issue, both the Japanese and the USA digital editions come full of bonus material such as a talk between manga authors Akira Toriyama and Takehiko Inoue. Toriyama has also contributed with a drawing of Goku and a note  congratulating the anniversary.

To celebrate the event, the publisher of the magazine, Shueisha has organized an exhibition divided in 3 volumes by periods of time. It started last summer and will last until September this year. The exhibition was divided in these phases:

A huge amount of merchandise featuring all the series that have been published in the WSJ all over the years was created for this events. Aaron visited Japan last sumer when the exhibition opened, so he managed to buy some cool stuff. For those like me that haven't been able to travel to Japan yet, the catalogues that come packed with lengthy interviews with the featured manga authors luckily are written in Japanese and English and are a great way to take a glimpse of what was exhibited.

ISLE OF DOGS directed by Wes Anderson

Director Wes Anderson's latest movie is a fest of stop motion animation and tributes to Japanese cinema. Humans in the movie talk in plain Japanese with no subtitles, and occasionally an interpreter translates what they say to English. For the Japanese release that will take place next May 25th, Japanese manga author and filmmaker Katsuhiro Otomo has drawn an exclusive poster. Here is what Otomo commented:

“When I first saw Isle of Dogs, I thought it might be difficult to make a poster that would add something to the movie...It is filled with homage to Japanese cinema, including music directly from Kurosawa, and seemed fully realized already, with all its details in place. It was its own complete world. Then I had an idea: to paint a very traditional Japanese dog to represent the island itself, and a very traditional Japanese wooden floor as the sea. I hope my drawing will be a meaningful way to help share this film with the world.”

EXHIBITION | Mario Romañach: "Do you love architecture?"

When: Monday, December 4, 2017— Monday, May 14, 2018

Where: Harvey & Irwin Kroiz Gallery, Architectural Archives | 220 South 34th Street, Philadelphia

Introduction from Architectural Archives

A beloved teacher at the University of Pennsylvania and a visionary architect who transformed modern architecture in his native Cuba in the years before the Revolution, Mario Romañach (1917-84) saw architecture, not as an abstract phenomenon to be developed though analytical techniques, but rather, as a discipline which made full sense only when framed in terms of human experience. “Architecture...you’ve got to touch it,” he would say, and it was that sensuous, experiential connection to buildings, cities, and landscapes that animated his art and inspired his students.

Marking the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Romañach’s birth, this exhibition presents a survey of his work, ranging from his groundbreaking residential designs in Havana to large-scale urban redevelopment plans for the West Side of New York City.

Born in Havana, Romañach, was educated in turbulent decades marked by prosperity, depression, war, and changing artistic sensibilities. His uncle, the painter Leopoldo Romañach, was a significant influence. Formal training in architecture came at the University of Havana. In the fourteen year period between 1945 and 1959, Romañach established a successful practice initially based on residential projects. These works, and his later large-scale urban planning, demonstrate his firm commitment to the ideals of the modern movement shaped and enriched by an understanding of local conditions and an interest in Cuban and Spanish culture.

Exiled from Cuba, Romañach and his family arrived in the United States during the fall of 1959. The practice that had been the center of his artistic world collapsed, never to be fully regained. Teaching, at first, provided for his transition, but then became his life’s work. That energy - so tied to building - ultimately was channeled to his students; a love of architecture perpetuated.
