The end of the American experience

My American experience is over. I am back in Oñati, my hometow in Basque Country. I was about to take my clothes out of the suitcase and organize them in my wardrobe when I saw my favourite childhood tracksuit. I wonder how loose I was wearing it when I was a 10 year old kid because it still fits to me nowadays, in a kind of a skinny fit of course, but fits. The USA running team tracksuit. How many nice memories. From childhood and from my recent interchange. It has been my first time in America, now it's all over and I am missing it hugely. Especially my travel to California. I must go back there for a longer period than 10 days. There is so much to do there. I will figure out how. And I will be in the road again soon.

Calvin & Hobbes 25th anniversary

It's 25 years since Bill Watterson's first Calvin & Hobbes strip hit the newspapers. I just combined here the first and the last strips of this my all time favorite cartoon. What a great memories reading them on Christmas and summer holidays. They are all collected in this beautiful box set edition.

MEMORIES by Otomo, Morimoto & Okamura

Memories is an animated anthology conformed by three short films by directors Koji Morimoto, Tensai Okamura and Katsuhiro Otomo. This is the first Japanese DVD edition released in 1999 that came in a Laser Disc size box with the original cinema release booklet. Its original price was around 100€ but someone was selling it like new for just 15€ shipping included. So I added another Katsuhiro Otomo related item to my never ending Otomo stuff collection.

There is no better time to share with your friends than breakfast, especially when studying abroad.

An unexpected, improvised performance by Constance, Giulia and Juliette shot in Mexico City for CAMPUS MOVIE FEST, a competition that took place on October 2010. There were some rules to follow in the competition, but when editing, it was prioritized to maintain the veracity of the moment before anything else, what caused the film to be disqualified for making use of copyrighted music.

MUSHISHI directed by Katsuhiro Otomo

Mushishi was released in a collectors box set on 2007, but it was so expensive that I didn't buy it. Today I found it at a bargain price in Amazon Marketplace. The box is awesome, designed with a beautiful paper and combining different textures and transparencies. It includes tho discs and two booklets with the script and many sketches by Otomo himself.

Kindle time!

Today I ordered the Amazon Kindle. My first eBook reader. I believe 140€ it's a reasonably price to finally decide to buy one. I have been looking forward to this day since two years ago when Amazon released it's first Kindle but the prices then were much more prohibitive for a penniless student like me. It's going to be great to have a device to read without carrying books around. The 3rd generation Kindle is available in Amazon: US / ES / JP

iMac G3 to iPhone4

Last June 7th, Steve Jobs presented the iPhone 4. Take a look at this comparison with the imac G3 a product by the same company, from a decade ago. That makes me think on the first computer we ever had at home.

CONCEPT VIDEO | En Clave de sol

This past June, the Solar Decathlon took place in Madrid. This is an event where universities from all over the world compete with the Solar Houses they have been designing and working on for the last years. The organization promoted a video contest in which  I participated with Rodrigo Delso and Javier Argota. We took the camera, a simple idea and we went on location to see what was going on there. We end up winning the first prize with this short video titled: "in treble clef".

Miyazaki at Berkeley

Hayao Miyazaki was honored with the Berkeley Japan Prize and he traveled to California where he was interviewed in the Center for Japanese Studies.

Adriana Lopez Biagi did this stool last year while studying in the IED. Today we have dusted off the stool and rethink it as a piece of furniture made of Silestone pieces and presented to this years Silestone competition organized by I+D+ART.

Rodrigo Delso and Javi Argota were developing some toys for the 1st Sustainable Toy competition in ETSAM Architecture School. The brief was to create a toy for children in emergency situations. A real prototype of the toy and a short video had to be presented. I joined them to make the videos and we end up making three different proposals.

First proposal: Teclas y Letras (keys and letters)

Rodrigo made this board game made out of  old re-painted computer keyboards. The game consists in forming words with the letters you pick up from the sack. Letters get attached in the board so even if the earth shakes, the letters remain in their place.

Second proposal: Dodecahedron

Argota developed a puzzle that children could build, followings the chronology of their actions throughout the day with a rope. Sleeping, eating, playing etc.

LAB | Begigorri a.k.a MMOT in Actua UPM contest 2010

My brother Aaron started developing a device capable of making touch screens on the go. We called it BEGIGORRI. I joined him in the process of developing the outside case and generating more ideas around. Ricardo Santonja told us we should present it to this years UPM Program for the creation of technology-based companies. So we did, we called the project MMOT and we were awarded with a Diploma. Aaron was not in Madrid to receive the award so I edited a photo to include him.

Canon 550D

Canon has recently released the 550D known in the USA as Rebel T2i and in Japan as the EOS Kiss x4. It has a lot of improvements over the previous 500D model, the first one is that it's the first affordable DSLR camera that records video in fullH. Next year I/m going to Mexico so I have to start practicing. The camera costed 820€. Check the prices on Amazon: US / ES / JP

Acer x110 proyector

Today I bought our first projector. I have been looking for a projector for a while and thinking on an HDready or full HD ones but finally I thought that almost everything I'm going to watch is going to be standard resolution DVDs so let's try with a more economic one. This Acer x110 costs 300€ it has a resolution of 800x600pixels. That's everything we can afford by now. Jumping from a small TV to a projector is a great experience. I'mm going to re watch a lot of movies.

This is probably my last project in school. It has been a good time all this years. It's time to move on.

Fix your Windows

We have been discussing about Cuba this days in architecture school. Architectural Association School students from London went there last month and have now come to Madrid Architecture School. We worked together here for one week with the data they brought from their travel to La Habana. Our team has concluded that what Cubans really need is to create a new operating system for themselves.

We have call the solution: "Fix your Windows" and we have created a book called 'El precioso libro no preciso' 'The Precious Imprecise Book'. It's a collection of tips and tools that all together and by upcoming updates created by the users themselves, should become a tool that shows how to fix real windows of an actual house.

The project itself is a metaphor of how by knowledge and communication things can start to get fixed. We choose windows because of their architectonic condition as an element that communicates the inside with the outside and also because we realize many windows in La Habana were old and damaged. We believe that the only way to fix problems, is to help people create their own systems, so they can not only solve their actual problems but they can continue finding solutions for future problems and the get more independent every day.

Our team was formed by Stavros Papavassiliou (AA), Ioannes Busca (ETSAM), Sofia Sclopis (ETSAM/Milan) and Agnete Plauborg Lorentzen (ETSAM/Copenhagen). Agnete did a great video that showcases our book project:

TRIBUTE VIDEO | Tribute to Andres Peréa

Madrid Architecture School professor Andres Peréa is retiring and Miguel Beloqui has been in charge of doing a tribute video featuring comments and interviews of his comrades, friends and ex-alumni. Iñigo Cornago and Guillermo Fernandez were also involved and we have been editing the final video in my house. I still have the Apple G3 PowerBook laptop that appears in the video, it was a gift from Alfonso Ortega.

WAX: CALIFORNIA directed by Spike Jonze

This is one of my favourites Spike Jonze music videos. Released on February 8, 1995. It is the first video included in Jonze's The work of Directors series DVD . Today as I was watching it I thought how long would it take if played at normal speed, so I open it up on Premiere and after some minutes I believe I got the result: 1000X faster. Here the resulting 15 seconds.

Upgrade to Windows 7

This is what my laptop desktop looked like until today. On July 22, 2009 Windows 7 was released but I have been waiting for my brother to test it before upgrading, because my last experience with upgrading to a new Windows was pretty bad.

My actual laptop, an HP6710b, originally came with Windows Vista installed on it, but just after a week I downgrade to XP, the previous version. This time however the guys in Redmond seem to have done a good work, and after my brothers approval this Christmas, I jumped to the new operating system.

I took the opportunity to I upgraded the Hard Drive too, from  500GB standard one to a 160GB SSD. I made a backup of all my files and get ready to restart again, this time with the power of the 64 bits technology. Everything boots faster now.
